About the artist

Iwahashi Eien 岩橋英遠 (1903-1999)was one of Japan’s most celebrated Nihonga painters of the 20th century. Born in Hokkaido, he became renowned for his serene depictions of birds, landscapes, and the natural beauty of northern Japan, distinguished by elegant compositions and subtle use of colour.

His artistic achievements earned him membership in the Japan Art Academy, and in 1994 he was awarded the prestigious Order of Culture, one of Japan’s highest cultural honours. In addition to his paintings, a number of his finest compositions were produced as high-quality limited-edition woodblock prints, which remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
