Description

About the artist

Rie Hidaka (日高理恵) is a contemporary Japanese printmaker born in 1958, best known for her refined intaglio and mezzotint etchings. She studied printmaking at Tama Art University in Tokyo, one of Japan’s leading institutions for fine arts, and developed a highly recognisable visual language based on rhythm, repetition, and the subtle interplay of shadow and light. Hidaka’s works often focus on textile-like patterns, geometric structures, and soft, floating surfaces that evoke movement and stillness at the same time.

Her prints are created through meticulous hand-engraving and plate-wiping techniques, giving each work a delicate texture and tonal depth. Since the 1980s, Hidaka has exhibited extensively in Japan, Europe, and the United States, and her prints are represented in several museum and institutional collections. She is regarded as one of Japan’s notable contemporary female printmakers working in the field of fine intaglio.
